Hey! A Colorful Mystery
by Kate Read
All is quiet in the deep blue sea, and a little pink fish is on the hunt to find someone to play with. No one answers, so the little fish shouts, “HEY!” startling a yellow fish swimming by and starting a rumor of a “great big fish hiding in the deep!” The rumor begins to grow bigger and bigger, rattling the red octopus, petrifying the purple puffer fish, terrifying the green turtle, and more until one by one, all the creatures flee… new fish are sucked into the growing story—the red octopus was really rattled, which petrified the purple puffer fish, and startled the blue shoal, until they all flee to the safety of a deep, dark cave. Uh-oh! That’s no cave at all… SNAP! It’s the mouth of a whale!
Ezra Jack Keats Illustrator Honor Award-winner Kate Read (author-illustrator of the award-winning One Fox: A Counting Book Thriller) returns with a clever oceanic twist on the old telephone game starring schools of brilliantly hued fish in a deep blue sea. This undersea adventure allows young readers to explore different varieties of sea animals, colors, and themes of gossip and unchecked claims. With back matter including an introduction to color theory, this vibrantly illustrated tale is perfect for interactive readalouds as well as for early childhood education units on colors, friendship, and marine life.
